Read Write Inc Phonics

At Kenton Bar Primary school we believe every child should be given the best opportunities to learn to read. We strive to provide the highest quality of education to help your child become confident, independent and successful readers.

As well as daily English lessons, children in Foundation Stage and Key Stage One access daily phonics sessions to develop the basic skills necessary for reading and writing. Where appropriate, children in Key Stage 2 also continue to access phonics intervention.

At Kenton Bar Primary School we use a synthetic phonics programme to teach reading called 'Read Write Inc' produced by Ruth Miskin.

Read Write Inc Phonics is a method of teaching reading which is centred around learning the sounds of the letters (phonics), and then blending them together to read words.  The children also learn to break down words into individual sounds in order to write them.

As children progress and can decode fluently they will work on their comprehension, vocabulary, writing, critical thinking and discussion skills and grammar – in a fun and meaningful way.

The children are assessed and grouped according to their ability and work in small groups with a reading teacher.

At the end of each half term the children will be assessed again to check they have made progress and will be grouped again.

We have also invested in RWI book bag books. These are the reading books that children take home to read. They have been carefully chosen to closely match each child’s phonics ability and are linked with the sounds that they are learning within school.
