French 

At Kenton Bar Primary School, we understand and celebrate the importance of learning another language. Learning French contributes to the children’s understanding and respect for other cultures and helps them to gain empathy for how it feels for other children learning English.

Intent

In Key Stage 2, children study the National Curriculum for Languages and, through teaching French, we aim to:

• Provide an opening to other cultures

• Encourage the children to become inquisitive learners

• Develop children’s knowledge of the French language and their knowledge of France.

• Enable pupils to express their ideas and thoughts in another language

• Enable pupils to understand and respond to speakers of French, both in speech and in writing

• Provide opportunities for pupils to communicate for practical purposes.
